Just some tips that I did not know back when I was a student. These are gathered from multiple sources including my own personal experiences of interviewing people and seeing mistakes in resumes.
- Use a good resume format. Check out Resume format samples for good sample formats to build your resume or CV upon.
It is odd when I get multiple resumes and some are unformatted, have weird spacings and are not built properly. Your resume is your first pitch of your personal brand to all recruiters. Make it proper.
- Know the difference between a resume and a CV. Keep your resume to 1 page if you are a student and maximum 2 pages if you are a working professional. Keep your CV from 2-3 pages if you are a student and 3-5 pages if you are a working professional.
- Always hand out your resume first and then give your CV if they show more interest in your profile. Put what matters in your resume and all the other stories and detailed descriptions in your CV. Keep your resume like how you would try to impress someone of the opposite sex. Short and crisp. Not going around telling your family history.
- Do not enter your entire family history in your resumes. I have no need of your biodata and whether you are single or committed. Enter what is important only.
- Name your resume and CV accordingly. Don't name it like
resume_random
or something. Name it like Riyaz - Resume - Hippo Video - 06/04/2021
.
- When you are sending a mail with your resume or CV attached, make sure that you attach your resume and CV. Else this will happen.

Resume tips - Neil Borne
When asked to review a resume the main points I am looking for are:
- Is the format clean and consistent? (same format from start to end)
- Are fonts the right size (not small and hard to read)
- Does the document have a smooth slow (easy to follow)
- Is information spaced right? (Are sentences jammed together)
- Is content summarized? (Does the information go into overload)
#5 stands out the most to me. Especially when I see very long-winded explanations. Figure how to shorten statements down to the high points and what was accomplished.

Here are some simple things that will improve your odds of landing your next job/internship:-
- Creating 2-3 versions of your resume:
- In a season, you are likely to apply to more than 10-12 jobs/internships.
- Creating a highly customised resume takes a lot of time.
- At the very least, you should have different resumes for different industries (eg. have a different resume for startup jobs vs Management Consulting jobs)
